This past weekend here in Scottsdale, Arizona was the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championship event. With this came an opportunity for us to go to one the most fashionable sporting events around. Dressing to impress was the assignment and, of course, we crushed it. However, while sipping champagne, listening to live music, and watching the festivities unfold we learned some valuable lessons about dressing for polo and we wanted to share them with you all. So without further adieu, here are our best learned secrets for being the best dressed at the polo match.
1. Dress to impress & if wearing dresses, leave the sundress at home.
We found formality to be the best choice when dressing for the matches. Be that you're wearing couture items, in an elegant suit, wearing a beautifully designed flowing dress, or a matching set, be sure that what you're wearing is more formal that what you would wear to a brunch. If you're over the age of 18 then we suggest leaving the sundress at home in favor of something a bit more refined. Our Matriarch dress in cream is an ideal example of a dress that won't be too hot but drips with the elegance and refinement required for such a reputable sporting event.
2. If you're wearing heels, be careful not to sink into the grass.
We almost always suggest you wear a pair of killer heels, they're both sexy and hot and you can almost never go wrong, but in this case we recommend leaning a bit more towards comfort. The fact of the matter is that polo is on grass and when you go, you're also going to be walking on the grass so dress in shoes that won't sink into the dirt and get ruined. This includes wedges, chunky heels, and flats.
3. Believe it or not, there is a difference between the hats you wear at polo and at the Kentucky Derby.
Hats are an integral aspect of any outfit when attending a polo match and when attending the Kentucky Derby. There is, however, a subtle but important difference between the the styles worn at each event. Polo is more subdued. Think hats in all sizes but in neutral and muted colors that match perfectly with the outfit you're wearing. The hat you're wearing isn't intended to overwhelm or to star in your outfit but to complement you.
4. When in doubt, wear solid colors.
Last but not least, when thinking of what to wear to a polo match think along the lines of beautiful neutrality. This can come in the form of almost anything but we recommend solid colors or simple and refined patterns. No loud patterns and as much as we're loathe to say it, stay far away from zebra print for this event.
We hope that helps and we look forward to seeing you next time at the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Match.
